The Core Ensemble’s unique instrumental combination of cello, piano and percussion provides
a striking perspective on classic jazz and Latin American tangos. For the past eleven years, the
Core Ensemble has celebrated extraordinary contemporary music making; now the ensemble
turns to some new classics: music of high concept substance which was written for popular
consumption. Jazz Meets Tango includes works by masters of the Jazz Age such as Duke Ellington,
George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus and incorporates the flamboyant tangos
of Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel. Vocalist Georgina Corbo joins the Core Ensemble with
performances of beloved folk and popular songs from Mexico and Argentina.
